Land of the free, home of the stupid.

In a sign of the poor state of our nation’s education system, a poll released this week by the Zogby International polling firm found that more Americans know who the three stooges were then how many branches we have in the U.S. government.

Is this a sign of how stupid our country has become? Is it just an indication of importance that pop culture has taken in our lives? Or is it a little bit of both?

Professor Robert Thompson, of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in Syracuse, New York, does not seem to believe that the results of the poll are a telltale sign of the increasing stupidity amongst Americans.

“These results are not about how ‘dumb’ Americans are, but about how much more effectively popular culture information is communicated,”

So what does this poll mean then? That if our educators find “cooler” and more entertaining ways to present their lesson plans to our nation’s students that they will learn more. Somehow, I doubt that, I don’t see other countries having the same disparity in their education systems as we do in ours.

Though, I would be lying if I said I myself was not slightly infected by the disease. I’ve been counting down the days until the next season of 24 on Fox.

::If anyone cares, here is a .pdf of the statistical results of the poll.

Maryland democrat vows to cure cancer

August 15, 2006 by Joe

I heard some news today that rocked my world and is causing me to seriously re-think what side of the political spectrum I lean on. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin of Maryland who is running for the U.S. Senate made the mother of all campaign promises today. Cardin, a Democrat from Baltimore County promised to cure cancer if elected.

I mean wow, who wouldn’t vote democrat now?, knowing that they can do that.

“We are going to lick cancer by 2015,” Cardin told a group of 15 people at the HopeWell Cancer Support Center on Falls Road.

I thought after John Edwards, and his claims that electing Kerry would cure paralysis, I didn’t think the Democrats could promise anything loftier, I guess I was wrong.
